Indonesia loses 0-7 to Syria

Oh my! What an embarrassing defeat. What is happening to this team. After a very good performance in the 2007 Asian Cup, winning 2-1 against Bahrain, and only losing 0-1 to South Korea and 1-2 to Saudi Arabia, now it lost easily 1-4 in the first leg and 0-7 to Syria in the second leg of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. I can imagine that Syrian players were very satisfied as they could send our team back home humiliated.

People in the world will once again mock us as an inferior, lazy, and not motivated country following the defeat. Where we put the face of 220 million people with such a shocking defeat. Football lovers like me will only continue to admire EPL football star such as Rooney, Lampard, Ronaldo, but we will never be proud of our national team if we keep losing like this.

Local competition is such a waste of money if the national team could not perform well. Perhaps it is right that our competition is all about money, not producing quality players and team.

Therefore, we really need reform in our football competition. Limiting foreign players is a must. Building the physical strength and mentality of our players should follow. As players are already paid well as professional in the country, now they have to show their professionalism. Local coaches should be given more football knowledges to enrich their understanding of local football.

However, I am very skeptical that those measures would be taken. Most people in the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) just think about themselves, never for the country.

The frustration will once again only be eased with a song titled “Yo Ayo Indonesia/Yo Ayo Jakarta/Yo Ayo Arema/Yo Ayo Persija”. Sing, sing, drink and drink to forget the defeat. And we will never grow.
